Cog Recon Strider: Smart machine (Part2)

19 Mar 2010

Strategy: One AFV, four ways of winning

One AFV, four ways of winning The box in a nutshell: the Unit Box: Cog Recon Strider contains the humanoid chassis of the Cog recon strider (type 1 AFV) and four interchangeable weapons: cannon, jammer, launcher and MG.
These weapons are mounted onto the chassis elbows. There are four combinations possible corresponding to the four recon striders presented in the Army Book: Cogs (see besides).

  Cannon Jammer Launcher MG
Marauder   x   x
Pillager x   x
Prowler x     x
Ravager   x x

There is no point copying the various tactical chapters from the Army Book for each of these Cog recon striders. Better look into to the modularity and various gaming opportunities offered by this box

Know yourself…

First, the frame. The Cog recon strider is surprisingly fast (Movement 30) and apparently fragile (Protection 12, 5 SP with only one for propulsion). However, a couple of advantages distinguish it from other AFVs: it’s a machine (so no morale tests) and its auto repair ability allows it to recover 1 SP per activation.
This vehicle will never be immobilized and never forced to rout: the only way of stopping it is by smashing it to pieces. Don’t be fooled by its apparent fragility: it won’t go down easy. The Cog recon strider runs fasts, from cover to cover, staying out or range or on the contrary playing live bowling with the enemy infantry. Don’t think you can wear it down, it will just keep repairing. There is only one way of destroying it: concentrate your best guns to smash it in one go.
On top of all this, a recon strider is rarely deployed alone: a unit may count up to four members. Destroying one already requires concentrating your fire power or relying on luck for damage localization (2 SP only in the center part of the frame). Now imagine trying to get rid of four…
Deploying four recon striders is an expensive tactical choice but also a very spectacular one. Try it even with proxies, just to find out: no other army will give you the feeling of leading a pack on the hunt. It’s amazing.

Know your enemies…

Now weapons! Knowing their specificities helps picking the right vehicle for the right job. The Cog recon strider’s weapons are typical Cog weapons: they offer amazing accuracy which will help you keep the whole game table in check. The Cog’s size is an advantage here: whoever pops their head out of the foxhole immediately gets fried.

• Light quantum cannon: This weapon has very high accuracy (9) and penetration (14/1). Efficient from very long range against heavy infantry and C1/C2 AFVs, yet it’s rate of fire will become an issue against more numerous enemies.
Found on: Pillager and Prowler

• Light quantum jammer: The weapon of choice against AFVs of all type, including C3s. Its higher than average accuracy and rate of fire make it the nightmare of enemy pilots. Bear in mind though that it is useless against infantry.
Found on: Marauder and Ravager

• Light quantum launcher: The ideal weapon against infantry that is numerous or hugging cover. This indirect fire weapon gains a lot, maybe even more so than other weapons, from the boosted Cog accuracy (5) and rate of fire/re-rolls (2/1). Unfortunately, you will be barely scratching the paint when trying it against AFVs.
Found on: Pillager and Ravager

• Light quantum MG: With its high rate of fire (4) and good all-round characteristics, the MG is ideal when fighting tightly packed infantry or light AFVs. When your recon striders have no pre-determined role to play or when playing them as a wild card, give them the versatile MG!
Found on: Marauder and Prowler

And victory shall be yours!

There is still a massive surprise to come, an explosive cherry on top if you will: recon striders may join a Cog company almost for free. Cogs with the “A.I. beacon” equipment can summon type 1 Cog AFVs, as long as they are in contact with an objective and pay 4 LP. Are concerned:
• A-volution G45, G18 and G36 (heroes)
• C-naps G36 (hero)
• Gunslingers (infantry **)

4 LP might seem a heavy price to pay for an army so reliant on LP to power Cog forcefields. Without the latter, Cog infantry is particularly vulnerable. This belief is flawed. Do not be fooled: whenever ever you chose to employ the A.I. beacon in your strategy, your company will have been built to allow you to do so. Such a company will include at least two of the following three components: an excellent commander, tough units with low numbers and (support units or type 3 infantry), a sufficient number of AFVs (which do not use any forcefields). Among the A-volution faction the use of the A.I. beacon is pretty much standard

Or
a Red Blok type *AFV with a real anti tank weapon
Or

Dreams are free!

AFV's Cogs are very flexibiles if played well.
My companies always includes Pillager and Ravager.
I personally use them for Launcher which is very powerfull over infantry unit.
